ALEXANDRIA, Va. (WUSA) — One Virginia lawmaker is proposing to make it illegal for drivers to eat a hamburger or any other food while sitting behind the wheel.

It didn’t take long standing on a street corner to witness all types of distracted driving. 9NEWS NOW cameras captured drivers scarfing down a burger, salad, and sundae.

There’s not much we don’t do behind the wheel and that’s what some lawmakers in Virginia want to outlaw.

Some drivers are really good at multi-tasking. A woman was found reading, chewing gum and holding her cell phone all while driving.

One driver defends some distractions, “We’ve been driving and eating for decades but talking and texting are problems.”

Texting while driving has become an epidemic costing lives and serious accidents. It’s even caught the attention of the National Transportation Safety Board to target hands free devices.

Virginia Delegate Bobby Orrock wants to take the law a step further and make anything you do that causes a distraction while driving a crime.

Del. Bobby Orrock, (R) Caroline Co. says, ‘The provision of the bill I’ve introduced, we are all probably guilty of violating. But if we all are driving distracted we are taking lives and creating misery.”

Drivers are skeptical about enforcing this proposed law.

“That would be a tall order to sell to people.”

“How would you enforce it. They can’t even enforce texting.”

“Eating behind the wheel, that would be hardest to give up.”

“You can’t eat while driving and you’re sitting in traffic for an hour and half traffic? I’m sorry you gotta use your time wisely.”

But if some lawmakers have their way, you might want to rethink the next time you reach for those fries.

Current Virginia law prohibits texting.

There are nearly a dozen bills that have been introduced in this year’s legislative session.

One proposed bill would ban personal grooming and reaching for objects not within an arm’s distance. Del. Orrock’s bill would create a blanket offense of doing something other than driving safely.

Last year efforts to strengthen the law failed to pass both house and senate committees and the same may hold true this time around.
