Orrock’s distracted-driving bill goes too far
Del. Bobby Orrock wants to make eating a hamburger, fiddling with an iPod, or putting on lipstick while driving illegal [" Orrock Wants Expansion Of Distracted-Driver Law ," Jan. 25].
That is all well and good, but the language of the bill outlaws driving a vehicle “while engaged in any activity that is not necessary to the operation of the vehicle and that actually impairs his ability to operate the vehicle.”
I’m not a lawyer, but I could interpret that to mean emergency service people cannot talk on the radio while driving, and deputies and other police agencies cannot look at their computer screens while driving.
Who will police them and hand out tickets?
Del. Orrock has the right idea, but his bill is going to need to be much more specific to allow emergency service personnel to do their job.
